Stressed out and demented
January 22, 2009 on 7:56 pm | In Psychology |Recent research looked at a large sample of older people who did not have any memory problems. They gave them a couple of personality tests. The group that tended to get easily stressed and were socially isolated had higher rates of dementia some years later than those who were more socially engaged and less neurotic. So, take it easy and stay connected if you don’t want to be demented! LS

Sounds easy, but it is easier said than done when you have a stressful life. Is there anything that can be done once the dementia sets in? My mother goes in and out of her fantasy world and has some pretty amazing (and scary) delusions. I’ve been wondering if there is a medicine that would keep her from hallucinating. Aricept only made her sick to her stomach. Jennifer

Have you had your mother evaluated by a geriatric psychiatrist? Delusions can be very scary for family members and patients. I would contact the local Alzheimer’s group for support (a wonderful organization) and possible referals to local doctors that specialize in treating dementia. Meanwhile, be sure to take care of yourself. LS

Thank you, I will try to get her to a psychiatrist. She is with it enough to know what is going on and is embarrassed by her condition, so that might be a bit of a struggle. I appreciate the advice. J.
