The Anti-Happiness Position

However, like most trends, it can easily swing too far. Recently, various authors have opined that happiness may not be all it’s cut out to be. Thus, they contend, would you rather be a fool and happy or Socrates and a tad miserable? Not that we or the authors of the “anti-happiness movement” are exactly “against” happiness, but there is more to life. Purpose and meaning come to mind as at least on a par with happiness. Again, we don’t advocate for “depression!” However, too much emphasis on any idea usually leads to a distorted perspective.
